Pilates vs Yoga: What's the Difference and Which Is Right for You?

Pilates and yoga often get mentioned in the same breath, and they do have a lot in common: both are low-impact, both use your own bodyweight, and both leave you feeling stronger and more flexible. But they're not the same thing. Here's how they differ, and how to choose the one that suits you.

What is yoga?

Yoga originated in India thousands of years ago and combines physical poses with breathing and, often, meditation. A class usually flows through a series of poses, with a strong focus on flexibility, balance and connecting movement to breath. Styles range from slow and restorative to fast and sweaty, like vinyasa or power yoga.

What is Pilates?

Pilates was developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates as a method of building strength and control. It focuses on the deep core muscles, posture and precise, controlled movements. You can do it on a mat or on a reformer — a machine with springs that adds resistance.

The main differences

  • Focus: yoga leans towards flexibility and mindfulness; Pilates leans towards core strength and control.
  • Pace: yoga often holds poses or flows between them; Pilates uses smaller, repeated movements.
  • Breathing: both use the breath, but in different ways depending on the style and teacher.
  • Equipment: yoga needs just a mat; Pilates can be mat-based or use a reformer.

Which one should you choose?

Choose yoga if you want to improve flexibility, unwind, and enjoy a slower, more mindful practice. Choose Pilates if you want to build core strength, improve posture and enjoy a more structured workout. Honestly? Many people do both — they complement each other well. Try a beginner class of each and see which one you look forward to.

What to wear for both

For yoga and Pilates, you want close-fitting clothes so your instructor can see your alignment, and fabric that won't ride up when you're upside down or lying on your back. High-rise leggings and a fitted top are the classic combo; a jumpsuit is even simpler. In reformer Pilates, avoid zips and loose fabric that could catch on the springs.
