Short days, cold mornings and rain that never quite stops — the Irish winter is a real test of motivation. But staying active through the darker months is one of the best things you can do for your energy and mood. Here's how to keep moving until spring.
1. Move your workouts to the light
If dark mornings make getting up impossible, don't fight it. Try a lunchtime walk or workout to catch the daylight, or switch to evening sessions at the gym. The best time to train is the one you'll actually stick to.
2. Have a rainy-day plan
Rain cancels a lot of good intentions. Keep a short home workout ready for when going out isn't appealing: 20 minutes of bodyweight squats, lunges, glute bridges, push-ups and planks is enough to make a difference.
3. Layer up for outdoor walks and runs
Dress in layers you can remove as you warm up: a fitted base layer, a tee or long sleeve, and a light waterproof jacket. Full-length leggings keep your legs warm, and a high-rise waistband stops cold air sneaking in at the back.
4. Try a class
Booking a class — yoga, Pilates, spin, strength — adds commitment and company. It's much harder to skip something you've paid for and that a friend is expecting you at.
5. Set small, specific goals
"Get fit" is easy to put off. "Three 30-minute workouts this week" is easy to tick off. Write your sessions in your calendar like any other appointment.
6. Make your kit something to look forward to
It sounds simple, but it works: having gym clothes you love makes it easier to get dressed and go. Lay your outfit out the night before so it's the first thing you see in the morning.
