There's nothing worse than bending down for a squat and wondering if your leggings just became see-through. If you've ever checked your reflection in the gym mirror mid-set, you're not alone. Here's what actually makes a pair of leggings squat-proof — and how to test them before you trust them.
1. Fabric thickness and density
Squat-proof leggings start with the fabric. Thin, loosely knitted material stretches apart when you bend, letting light (and skin) show through. Look for a fabric that feels substantial between your fingers and doesn't turn shiny or pale when you pull it. A good test: stretch a section over your hand. If you can clearly see your skin, it won't hold up in a deep squat.
2. Four-way stretch
Fabric that only stretches in one direction gets pulled thin in the places that move the most. Four-way stretch fabric moves with your body in every direction, so the tension is spread evenly instead of concentrated on your hips and seat. It also means no digging in at the waist when you move.
3. A high-rise waistband that stays put
A high waist does more than look good. It keeps the leggings anchored, so they don't slide down and stretch thin at the back when you bend. If you find yourself pulling your leggings up between sets, the waistband isn't doing its job.
4. The right size (not too small)
This is the most common mistake. Sizing down for a tighter, more sculpted look stretches the fabric further than it was designed for — and that's when sheerness happens. Choose the size that fits your waist and hips comfortably; good leggings will sculpt without needing to be a size too small.
5. Colour matters
Darker colours are naturally more forgiving. If you're nervous about sheerness, start with black, dark coffee or wine. Lighter shades like white or pearl pink need a denser fabric to stay opaque — always test them in good light before your first session.
How to do the squat test
- Stand with your back to a mirror in natural daylight (gym lighting is brighter than your bedroom).
- Do a full, deep squat — not a half one.
- Check the seat, the backs of your thighs and the knees.
- Repeat with a forward fold to check the waistband area.
If you can't see skin or underwear in any of these positions, you're good to go.
